Ed was born 1918 in the Kuchen Kingdom in Europe, as the bastard son of Marquis Braunschweig and a woman of lower rank. The woman also had a daughter called Elaine. After the sibling's mother died, their father came and since he had no legitimate son, he took them in, and brought them to the Braunscheweig manor to live with him, his wife, and his three daughters. The daughters were happy to have younger siblings, but the wife was not pleased, and was mean to the two, forbidding her daughters from talking to Ed and Elaine, and being rude and unaccepting toward them. To protect Elaine, the marquis sent her away to another family, so she could be brought up safely. The two siblings split Elaine's white hair ribbons between them, so that they had one each to identify each other with, before Elaine left. Once Elaine was with a new family, she also changed her name and became Erika Krause, although this was nothing that Ed was aware of.

Ed met a boy named Orphe at a party, and became best friends with him over the years. Ed also spent a lot of time doing physical activities, like sports, horseback riding, and fencing, and became good at all of it, as well as the piano, which his father had played to his mother.

He became a student at the Rozenstolz Academy, which is the best school in the country and has an accompanying school town surrounding it, and he was chosen as a Strahl candidate. The Strahl are the king's personal advisers. Other people were also chosen as candidates, and besides Orphe, he became close with Ludwig, Camus, and Naoji. He doesn't know that later, his sister comes to Rozenstolz as well.

One day, the rumour that Ed isn't of noble birth is spred in the school, and Orphe thinks that the perpetrator is Ludwig (since Orphe and Lui have completely different values and doesn't get along) and since Lui doesn't deny it - when it in fact was one of Lui's followers who started the rumour - Orphe challenges him to an illegal fight. It's interrupted by Naoji and Ed, and the real perpetrator is outed by them. But the situation makes Ed long for his sister more than he usually does, and when he meets a girl in town harassed by some men, he is reminded of Elaine, and finds out that she has the same name as her, so he thinks that she might be her. However, she was hired by his stepmother to tempt him to break the school rules so he would be expelled by the school and cast out by his father. He was saved by Orphe and a mysterious man when he was attacked, however, and thanks to Lui refusing to let the teachers check for missing boys in the dormitory (since the dormitories are run by the students to teach them how to govern themselves) Ed managed to stay in school and in his family.

Camus has the special ability of talking to flowers and seeing flashes of the future. He tells Ed and Orphe of when he first met Lui, who is his cousin. Victor Griffith, an alumni with the same ability as Camus approaches him, asking for Camus' help since he has lost his own ability and has encountered misfortune in business. When Camus saves another boy from an accident thanks to his abilities, the other students (sans Camus' friends among the candidates) thinks that he caused it and they cat scared of him. Griffith asks Camus to come work for him, and when Camus says no, he tries to kidnap the boy, but his friends comes to save him. Ed and Orphe also, during this inceident, meets the man that helped saving Ed, and learns that he's a Brit named Isaac.

When Naoji is homesick for Japan - because Naoji is an exchange student from there - Ed brings him to town to help him take his mind off of things. There, they are approached by an inn keeper, who tells them that one of her guests is a Japanese man who is on his death bed, and asks if they can't come see him, as the man longs to speak Japanese with someone again before he dies. Naoji stays the night, while Ed goes back to make sure his friend is not found out. Once he returns, Naoji is feeling much better, since he found strength in the man's biography.

The candidates are invited to a ball that Lui's family is holding, and are introduced to Lui's new fianceé, and at the party, the King's elder brother (who is Lui's uncle) makes an appearance, but he soon leaves again, after he made sure an explosive device is planted at the party. It's set off and Lui is saved by his friends. Ed tries to follow the perpetrator but the one who made the explosives go off managed to run away. Lui later tells them that he has cancelled his marriage.

Isaac visits the school as a foreign writer gathering material, and he interviews the students. Both Orphe and Lui get scolded by him for having either naive or dangerous opinions. He also tells them as his time as a soldier. Later that night Lui and Orphe are locked into a warehouse which is set on fire, and they are saved by Isaac.

Rozenstolz has a student exchange with another school, and Ed and Naoji are sent away to it. When they return, they get to hear that a female student named Ishtar tried to take over the school and, ultimately, overthrow the king, and that Lui pretended to take her side and threatens to uncover her if she doesn't leave the school immediately.

On the day of Orphe's sister's memorial day, Ed takes him to town to cheer him up, and they meett Isaac, who brings them to a local pub where they play billiards. Orphe gets a memento stolen by a drunkard, and when he has to choose between the locket and the drunk's life, he saves the man instead. The drunk finds and returns the locket later, though.

A graduate of Rosenstolz Academy is disturbing the students with his offers of unimaginable pleasures. The five Strahl candidates set out to meet up with Josef Torger, and Torger reveals that he earned his money through blackmailing nobles who conducted illegal activities. Torger gets offered a teaching position at the school by the headmaster, but he declines the offer, tells everyone to evacuate his manor, and then sets it and himself on fire.

Orpheus receives a visit from his dead sister’s fiancé, and then goes missing. When Ed has been gone for longer than expected, Ed gets worried and goes to talk to the other candidates about it. Lui reveals that him and his father has found out about a plan to assassinate the king, and Ed understands that it's more important to protect the king than to blindly look for Orphe. Lui position the other Strahl candidates in strategic points to protect the king from being assassinated. A teacher, Beruze, uncovers his true form as one of the members of the operation of taking the king's life, and Isaac helps Orphe to reach the academy in time to confront him. The king's life is saved and Orphe is reunited with his friends. It is also revealed that the king's brother had part in the assassination.

The students goes on vacation from school, and during the last day of it, Ed and Orphe are approached by the headmaster, as are the other Strahl candidates. When they return to school, they find out that the headmaster has been replaced and that a lot of reforms are to happen at the school. Headmaster Werner claims that good people does not always come from the best financial background. The entire school is abuzz, preparing for the series of tests that will determine who will learn in which class. Not everyone is as open minded about it as the headmaster and argues breaks between the students. The discord causes pressure on Camus, who is very sensitive to it. Orpherus and Edward gain an audience with the king, but one of the teachers, Ailos, pulls some connections and other people are brought in front of the king instead of them. Nearly despairing they decided that if the situation will call for it, they will not attend their candidate assessment tests. But the meeting with the king leaves them with more questions and answers, as it is clear that he is hiding something. They manage to make it back in time thanks to one of the new teachers, Gerald.

Ed's stepmother makes a pact with the Beruze, saying that if Beruze will get rid of Ed she will sign a petition and convince her husband to sign as well. Beruze calls Ed away from Rosenstolz in false pretence and there ambushes him. Ed’s horse fell into a steep valley and Ed got injured, but he is not dead. While making his way home he realizes that his father is not really sick, and goes to confront his step mother. Meanwhile, Orphe is surprised to be visited by Ed’s father and soon realizes that Ed has been set up. Together they follow Ed to Ed’s home.

Following the incident with Ed and his rising insecurities, Camus withdraws from Rosenstolz. He returns to his house but can’t find the peace he has hoped for, while Ed and Orphe meet with his brother to try and convince him to encourage Camus to return. Thanks to one of the new Strahl candidates, Elmunt, Camus regains his confidence and returns to school.

Lui invites Orphe, Ed, Camus and Naoji to his house because his mother is feeling depressed. Orphe realizes that Lui’s mother is depressed not only because her brother betrayed her other brother last year, but Lui refuses to tell him anything. Lui’s mother breaks down in the middle of the visit, and Naoji helps her as well as himself to find peace once again.

In the middle of the day the imperial army surround Rozenstolz and accuse Lui of severe treason. Lui’s family is out of Kuchen and Lui is planning to run into hiding, and gets help from his friends despite declining their offers of help. While on the run, the five Strahl candidates are intercepted by Isaac’s men, and Isaac shoots at Orphe, but misses deliberately. Ed sees him. After making sure Lui is safe, Ed searches for Isaac, walking in the less fortunate areas of the city at night. Ed finds Isaac, who tells him to get Lui out of the country, and is later found by Professor Gerald, who agrees not to tell on him if he won’t disobey the school rules again. Ed is bothered by his conversation with Isaac, while the pursuit after Lui continues.

Beruze takes over the palace and force the king to hear his demands. Understanding that Beruze has made his move, Lui sets out to stop him, but Orphe, Naoji, Ed and Camus insists on coming as well. They are stopped by Ailos, but receive the unexpected support of the entire academy. Once they reach the sealed off palace, they are being shown to a tunnel by Professor Gerald, and confront with both Isaac and Beruze. Headmaster Bartholomew returns. Beruze runs off once headmaster Bartholomew informs them that England and Kuchen are now official allies in the upcoming war, and the Strahl candidates chase after him. They find him in an abandoned warehouse where he confronts headmaster Werner, his half-brother, and tries to commit suicide. Once everything is over, the Strahl candidates have a conversation with the king, where he asks them to study diligently so that they could become his advisors. It is also revealed that Professor Gerald is actually one of the king’s advisors who taught at the school as a favor for a friend – headmaster Bartholomew, who regained his position.
